In north-eastern Lower Austria, near the Mitterhof farm (Wildendürnbach municipality), lies a once densely populated area on the banks of the Thaya river, which shows traces of settlement from the Neolithic onwards. The area, which is located directly at the Czech border, experienced several phases of settlement, ranging from the Early Bronze Age at the latest, through the Iron Age, the Roman Imperial Age and the Migration Period to the Late Middle Ages. Of particular interest are an as yet undated, large land defence (an interrupted ditch system), burial grounds from the Iron Age, the Roman Imperial Age and the Migration Period, numerous house and settlement pits from prehistory and early history, as well as the deserted medieval village Grafenwasen with its motte-and-bailey castle, the "Runder Berg".
